The Sign

A round plaque built to read as the head of a cask, with oak leaves and acorns worked all the way around the rim and the initial set in a circle at the top. The family name curves across the center, the bar line under it, the year at the bottom of the round.

Because the field is a circle, the lettering is set on curves rather than straight lines. It is a harder thing to lay out and it is the reason this one looks like a cask head and not like a coaster.

Craftsmanship

Leaves and acorns are grown in copper and brass over a sculpted band, each leaf lifted at its own height so the border has a rolling surface rather than a flat stamped look. Individual acorns stand proudest, the lettering sits lower, the ground behind is blackened. Everything raised stands 2 to 5 mm off that ground. The disc is 8 to 10 mm thick and solid through, so it has the weight in the hand you expect from something that is meant to be cask furniture.

Built to last

A UV-protective seal keeps the brass warm and stops it clouding. Steam from a kettle, heat from a bar light, damp in a cellar conversion: none of it reaches the metal.

Personalization

The family name, the bar line, the year, and one initial for the circle at the top. The round field is tighter than the shaped signs, so a long family name is set a little smaller rather than crowded to the rim. The renders show WHISKY. If you want WHISKEY, type WHISKEY. Mounting

Pick one of three at checkout.

• Keyhole slots: cut into the back, two screws and done.
• Peel-and-stick tape: heavy sealed strips, applied here before it ships. Nothing to drill.
• Floating stud mount: studs that hold it clear of the wall, so the edge reads as a silhouette.

All three arrive with the fixings and a short instruction card.

Where it works

Cellar bars, brick alcoves, the wall at the end of a run of shelving where a rectangle would fight the shape of the space. Hung on its own it reads as a piece of cooperage rather than a sign.

Gifting

For a whiskey drinker, a home brewer, or anyone whose bar is built out of barrel staves already. The year line is the part people remember.

Care

Dust it with a soft dry cloth. Metal polish will strip the finish, so leave it alone.
