About the Petrified Wood

This top is fossil wood: a tree that was buried, flooded with mineral-bearing water, and slowly rebuilt in quartz cell by cell over millions of years. The wood is gone; the record of it is not.

What survives is the figure of the original timber. Growth rings, fiber lines and the ragged edge where bark once sat show in the polished face, in browns, grays and rust reds set by iron and manganese. It is the one stone here that started out alive.

How It’s Made

One piece of petrified wood is polished flat on the face and left with its natural outline, so the edge follows the shape of the fossil.

That edge is electroformed, with metal grown onto the stone in layers until it has real thickness and is permanently bonded. The legs are electroformed metal in the same finish: gold and rose gold pick up the rust tones, silver the gray.

Every fossil slab differs in grain and outline, and slight variation in natural stone will occur. Other sizes and shapes can be made to order on request.

Assembly

The slab and the legs ship as separate pieces. The legs are removable and thread into the underside, so the table is easily assembled upon delivery.

Few gifts come with a longer backstory, which is why this one works for a milestone: a new house, a wedding, an anniversary or a retirement. It also reads well as a corporate or client gift.

Care

Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Soak up liquids immediately with a paper towel and wipe dry to avoid staining, and avoid chemical cleaners.
