About the Agate

Golden brown agate runs warm: honey, amber and ochre in the wide bands, with cream and pale gold lines between them. The color shifts gradually across a plate, one tone giving way to the next instead of meeting at a hard border.

It is the friendliest agate under lamplight. The lighter bands take light through their thickness and hold a soft glow, while the darker ones turn treacle-colored, so the whole surface warms up in the evening rather than going flat.

How It’s Made

The plate is rectangular, 10" x 15", and it is composite: agate of similar tones and colors is joined with a clear epoxy resin poured over the pieces until it sets as one firm surface. The stone is trimmed all round with electroformed brass, real metal grown onto the agate and permanently bonded rather than a coating that can rub off. Plain modern handles, square and unfussy, are fitted at each end in solid brass.
